Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

BLUES DOMINATE BADGERS

The No. 4 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team extended their win streak to 14 games in a 7-0 victory over the Brock Badgers on Saturday night (Jan. 4) at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues improve to 16-2-0 and remain atop the OUA West standings. It also marks the first time since the 1973-74 season that the Blues have won 14 straight regular season games.

TORONTO STATS: Second-year forward Joey Manchurek led the Blues with one goal and two assists, while veteran defenceman Evan MacEachern had three assists on the night. Sophomore netminder Alex Bishop continued his dominance between the pipes, making 25 saves in his third shutout victory of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues top-ranked powerplay opened the scoring towards the end of a physical first period. Rookie defenceman Brendan Bornstein one-timed a pass from Manchurek from the point through traffic to beat Badgers netminder Mario Cavaliere. The Blues were up 1-0 after 20 minutes of action.

Toronto scored five unanswered goals in the second frame to put the game out of reach. Less than four minutes in, MacEachern fed a long stretch pass to Nathan Hudgin, who found Willy Paul at the side of the net for a wraparound goal.

OUA point leader David Thomson then netted his 12th goal of the season on the powerplay midway through the second period and rookie forward Kyle Potts buried a rebound 37 seconds later.

Manchurek also notched his 12th marker of 2019-20, sending a booming shot into the top corner on the powerplay. Kyle Clarke scored with 17 seconds remaining in the period off a Riley Bruce rebound. The Blues were up 6-0 at the second intermission.

Chase Olsen scored Toronto's fourth powerplay goal of the game at the midway point of the third period, when he finished off a MacEachern rebound.

UP NEXT: The Blues host the Ryerson Rams this Thursday, January 9 at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
