Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

BISHOP, BLUES EDGE MUSTANGS ON THE ROAD

Second-year netminder Alex Bishop posted 39 saves in helping the No. 5 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team to a 4-3 victory over the Western Mustangs on Wednesday, January 29 in London, Ont.

Bishop notched 11 saves in each of the first and second frames, before putting up 17 stops in the third period to secure his OUA-leading 18th win of the season.

With the win, the Blues improve to 20-3-2 and remain atop the OUA West division with three regular season games remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Mustangs opened the scoring late in the first period as Franco Sproviero found the back of the net on the powerplay. Toronto evened the score early in the second frame as team captain Willy Paul jumped in on the rush and Kyle Potts banged in his rebound.

U of T took the lead just over two minutes later when David Thomson skated into the slot and slid the puck through the legs of Mustangs goalie David Ovsjannikov for his team-leading 16th goal of the season.

That lead didn't last long though as Sean Montgomery tied the game back up for the Mustangs on a powerplay less than a minute later.

Third-year forward Jared Leslie regained the lead for U of T, finishing off a nice tic-tac-toe play with Scott Kirton and Kyle Clarke towards the end of the second period and the Blues were up 3-2 after 40 minutes of action.

The Blues doubled their lead just over three minutes into the third period as Kyle Clarke tipped in a Colin Paradis point shot. Western notched their third powerplay goal of the game just over three minutes later but it was all Bishop from there as the Blues held on for the one-goal victory.

UP NEXT: The Blues are back in action this Saturday, February 1 as they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
