Emily Ziraldo and Anna Costanzo each netted hattricks as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team opened their 2019 regular season campaign with a 9-0 victory over the McGill Martlets on Sunday morning (Sept. 8) at York University.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues scored early and often as rookie forward Madeline Sherwood netted her first career goal, which stood as the game-winner, in the sixth minute of play. Rachel Spouge added another just over a minute later and Ziraldo tallied back-to-back goals to give the Blues a 4-0 lead after 13 minutes of play.
Â
Costanzo then scored two goals within three minutes of each other, followed by Isabella Watson and Ziraldo's third to put the Blues up 8-0 at halftime. Costanzo rounded out the scoring with her third of the game in the 53rd minute.
Â
Elizabeth O'Hara and Ashley Kowal split duties in net to earn the shut out for the Blues.
Â
UP NEXT: The Blues travel to Kingston, Ont., to take on the Queen's Gaels and Western Mustangs next Saturday, September 14.
