Game of the Week Hockey

Men's Ice Hockey

PLAYOFFS ON THE LINE THIS WEEKEND

Our Under Armour Game of the Week features the University of Toronto men's hockey team hosting the Laurier Golden Hawks this Friday, February 8 at Varsity Arena at 7:00 p.m.

Toronto will be honouring their graduating players prior to the final home game of the season. The team currently holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the OUA West division, but only three points separate tenth to fourth. With huge playoff positioning at stake, this game will go a long way in determining who's in and who's out.

The Blues have won five of their last six games to climb back into the playoff picture. They were able to hold off a late push by the No. 9 Ryerson Rams and beat them 5-4 in a shootout. This will be the second game of a back-to-back for Toronto, after having played in Guelph the night before.

First-year goalie Alex Bishop has been the anchor between the pipes this year for U of T. In his last 10 starts, the Richmond Hill, Ont., native has posted a 1.80 goals against average and .938 save percentage.

Offensively, the Blues rely on many pieces to chip in. First-year forward David Thomson leads the way in all statistical categories for the team registering nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points in 26 games. Other first-year forwards to also keep an eye on are Nathan Hudgin and Joey Manchurek. Hudgin is currently riding a five-game goal streak, while Manchurek has posted 16 points in only 14 games, including five points in the last two contests.

Veteran forward Matt Campagna continues to be a threat. The Mississauga, Ont., native recorded five points in the last two games, including three assists and the shootout winner on Saturday night against Ryerson.

Laurier is a very similar squad to Toronto in a couple ways. They play a defensive game, have a variety of scorers and are still fighting for their playoff lives. The Golden Hawks are in seventh only one point up on the Blues.

11 players on Laurier's roster have double-digit points this season with the main catalyst being Christian Mroczkowski. The fourth-year forward has nine points is his last five games. The team is 4-2 in their last six games and will also be in the midst of a back-to-back, playing their inner-city rival Waterloo Warriors at home on Thursday.

The last time these two teams met was in early November. The Blues had a tough time solving the opposing first-year goalie Tyler Fassl and fell 4-1.

All the action will be streamed on OUA.tv.
