The University of Toronto football program is pleased to announce that highly-touted recruit Kinsale Philip has signed a letter of intent and committed to play for the Varsity Blues beginning in the 2019 season.
Â
"The Varsity Blues program is very excited to welcome a student-athlete of Kinsale's calibre to the University of Toronto", said Beth Ali, U of T's executive director of athletics and physical activity. "He is an exceptional football player and an even more impressive student. We look forward to his growth and development, and will support his pursuit of academic and athletic excellence to maximize his potential."
Â
The 6-foot-0, 195-pound quarterback is a product of New Westminster Secondary School in British Columbia. There, Philip led the New Westminster Hyacks to the 2017 AAA British Columbia provincial championship title, while also finishing sixth in the national rankings.
Â
"We are extremely pleased to announce the addition of Kinsale Philip to our program", stated Greg Marshall, head coach of the Varsity Blues football program. "He is going to be a tremendous difference maker and outstanding leader on and off the field for the Varsity Blues."
Â
Philip is currently ranked No. 39 on the Canadian Football Chat (CFC) Top 100 list and is a rare player that can contribute in all three phases of the game
Â
"What separated U of T from everyone else was the great relationship I made with coaching staff," said Philip. "Our conversations felt personable and I needed that in order to see a future connection. There is so much satisfaction in unexpected success and I can't wait to help bring back U of T to its tradition of winning. Whether it be on the field, in the community, or in the classroom, I feel Toronto is a perfect opportunity to win in all aspects. I'm really looking forward to getting started on my journey as a Varsity Blue."
Â
Philip has applied to study within U of T's humanities stream beginning in September.
Â
Students who sign a letter of intent and/or commit to Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams will be eligible to play at the University of Toronto provided they are academically admissible and have applied through the normal process with the Ontario Universities Application Centre.
