Erica Fryer's fourth shutout of the season helped the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team take down the top seeded Guelph Gryphons 1-0, on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16) on the road.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENDED: It was a defensive affair for majority of the game with the score remaining at 0-0 for the entire first and bulk of the second period. The OUA's top power play in Toronto finally solved Guelph's goalie Valerie Lamenta on their third chance.
Â
Off Gabrielle De Serres rebound, Louie Bieman grabbed the loose puck and backhanded it in for the opening goal with 3:10 remaining in the second. That would stand as the only goal in the entire contest.
Â
First-year goalie Fryer stopped all 16 saves she faced to pick up her fourth shutout of the season.
Â
UP NEXT: Toronto (13-6-2-2) clinched third place in the OUA and home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs with the win. They will wait for the results of the final regular season games to determine their opponent and schedule. Stay tune to varsityblues.ca with the latest updates on the playoffs.
