Alina Dormann exploded for a season-high 26 points to help the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team take down the No. 4 Ryerson Rams 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20) on Friday night at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year right side hitter Dormann registered 23 kills, two aces and one block, while adding eight digs on the night.
Fourth-year middle Anna Licht chipped in with 9.5 points off eight kills, 1.5 blocks, and had seven digs. Second-year middle Jenna Woock put up eight points with seven kills, while third-year left side hitter Brianna Patrick also had eight points, all off kills.
First-year setter Hayley Goodwin posted a game-high 37 assists and added eight digs, while fifth-year veteran Anna Feore posted seven points off six kills, and added 12 digs in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The two juggernauts went back-and-forth in the first set, but it was the Blues up 16-12 at the first technical timeout. Dormann dominated the rest of the way, registering seven kills, including the one that clinched the opening set, 25-18.
The see-saw battle continued in the second set. Toronto was able to take the 16-15 advantage at the technical timeout. The defending national champions responded thought, going on a 7-0 run to help take the second set 25-21.
Toronto put the pressure back on Ryerson, leading 16-10 at the third technical timeout. They kept pouring in the points and put together a 7-2 run, which led to a 25-20 set victory.
The fourth set was similar to the first two. The Blues went into the technical timeout leading for the fourth straight time, this time 16-14. Toronto did not look back the rest of the way, snagging it 25-20.
UP NEXT: The Blues are not back in action until next Sunday (Feb. 10) afternoon, when they host the Trent Excalibur at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
