U of T headed into the December exam break on a 12-game winning streak and sit atop the OUA West division with a 14-2-0 record. The Blues will look to keep that streak going as they first travel to take on the York Lions on Friday night (Jan. 3).
Much of Toronto's success has come from excellent goaltending and depth of scoring. Second-year netminder Alex Bishop earned U SPORTS athlete of the month honours after holding a .950 save percentage and 1.38 goals against average over eight games in November. The commerce major currently ranks third in the province with a 2.21 goals against average and fourth with a .926 save percentage, while also leading all OUA goaltenders with 13 wins.
Just as Bishop has been dominant between the pipes, second-year forwards David Thomson and Joey Manchurek have bolstered the Blues offence through the first half of the season. Thomson, a psychology and criminology major from Vaughan, Ont., leads the OUA with 26 points and five powerplay goals. An industrial relations and human resources major, Manchurek ranks fifth in the province with 23 points in 16 games.
What is more impressive has been U of T's offensive depth. Six other players have reached double-digit points, while 14 players have scored two or more goals. Rookie forward Oliver Benwell ranks second on the team with 10 goals scored, while sophomore Nathan Hudgin has 18 points in 16 games.
The Brock Badgers are one of only two teams to have beaten the Blues in 2019-20. The Badgers took the series opener, 5-1, in St. Catharines on Oct. 10, but U of T bounced back with a 6-2 victory, also on the road, on Nov. 29.
Brock holds a 10-6-1 record and are tied with the Guelph Gryphons for fourth place in the OUA standings.
