The No. 3 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Queen's Gaels 3-1 on Saturday night (Nov 9) at Varsity Arena.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues applied early pressure on the Gaels, taking eight shots in the first frame. Despite their relentlessness, Queen's goalie Makenzy Arsenault shut the door and kept her team in the fight. After 20 minutes, the game remained scoreless.
Â
The second period was feisty and saw both teams get into some pushing and shoving. Toronto got a powerplay opportunity and took full advantage. Taylor Trussler took a pass from behind the net, found open ice and made a perfectly placed shot that beat Arsenault. The Gaels made an offensive push and Bridgid Goris found the back of the net to tie the game up.
Â
The game continued to be chippy throughout the final frame. Second-year goalie Erica Fryer made some huge toe saves to keep the Blues in it. With less than five minutes remaining, fourth-year forward Breanna Berndsen found the back of the net to give U of T the late lead for the second night in a row. Queen's pulled their goalie trying to force overtime but Lauren MacDonnell would score her first career OUA goal on the empty net to close out the game.
Â
Fryer made 19 saves and recorded her fourth win of the season.
Â
UP NEXT: The Blues head to North Bay to take on the No. 10 Nipissing Lakers on Friday night (Nov 15) at 7:30pm.
