The No. 6 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 4-1 in their 2019/20 home opener on Saturday night (Oct 26).
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues came out of the gates looking to control the game. Through the first 20 minutes, they only allowed three shots on goal, while they peppered Lancers fourth-year goalie Molly Jenkins with 16. Jenkins saved all of them as each team headed to the dressing without a goal.
Toronto headed to the penalty box six minutes into the second period but Windsor wouldn't be able to get anything going. Instead, Mathilde De Serres and Taylor Trussler got a shorthanded 2-on-0 opportunity and Trussler buried it to open up the scoring. Â Mathilde De Serres would keep shining as she found the back of the net off a great pass from the Blues rookie forward Natasha Athanasakos.
Â
Midway through the third period, Trussler would score her second of the night off a great passing play with Gabrielle De Serres. The Lancers finally got on the board with a goal from Ashley Maitre but there was not enough time for Windsor to make a comeback. Mathilde De Serres closed out the game by roofing her second goal past Jenkins.
Â
Mathilde De Serres recorded three points (2G, 1A) and second-year goalie Erica Fryer made 19 saves and recorded her first win of the season in her first start.
