BLUES WIN BIG IN SCHOOL DAY SHOWDOWN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team notched a big 6-1 victory over the York Lions in a School Day game on Monday, January 28 at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues move from 10th to tied for seventh in the highlight competitive OUA West standings, with three regular season games remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Joey Manchurek opened the scoring five minutes into the game on Toronto's first powerplay, wiring a shot from the point through traffic and into the net. The Windsor, Ont., native added his second of the game 10 minutes later, tipping in a Willy Paul shot at the side of the net.

The Lions got on the board three minutes later as Sal Filice scored on a 5-on-3 advantage, but the Blues bounced right back as Matt Campagna forced a turnover and made no mistake on a shorthanded breakaway. Toronto was up 3-1 after 20 minutes of action.

Fourth-year forward Ryan Kirkup extended Toronto's lead midway through the second period, receiving a centering pass from Scott Kirton and making a nice move around the Lions goaltender. Rookie standout David Thomson put the Blues up 5-1 four minutes later, burying a rebound on a 5-on-3 advantage. The Blues took a 5-1 lead into the second intermission.

Rookie forward Nathan Hudgin got his name on the score sheet, finishing off a nice passing play with Thomson and Kevin Lavoie early in the third period.

UP NEXT: The Blues head across town to take on the Ryerson Rams this Saturday, February 2. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
