The No. 8 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team dropped a narrow 3-2 decision (25-22, 24-26, 25-17, 15-25, 10-15) to the No. 6 Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 13) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year right side hitter Alina Dormann notched a team-high 19.5 points off of 17 kills, two aces and an assisted block, while also adding 16 digs on the day.
Sophomore middle Jenna Woock recorded 16.5 points, matching her season-high of 11 kills and adding 5.5 blocks. Fifth-year veteran Anna Feore totaled 15.5 points off of 10 kills, 3.5 blocks and two aces, and had a team-high 19 digs.
Third-year middle Anna Licht racked up 11 points off of six kills, two blocks and three aces, while Brianna Patrick had nine points and 13 digs. Rookie setter Hayley Goodwin tallied 42 assists and 12 digs, while libero Sophia Currier added 17 digs in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues got out to a strong start, building a 16-9 lead at the first set technical timeout. With Toronto leading 22-13, the Warriors rallied and went on a 9-1 run, but a final kill from Patrick sealed the 25-22 victory for the Blues.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle from the start and an Anna Feore kill gave the home team a narrow 16-15 advantage at the break. The Warriors charged back to take a 23-19 lead, but the Blues didn't quit and tied it back up at 24-24; however, Waterloo was able to even the match with the 26-24 second set win.
The Blues took charge early in the third set and quickly built a 16-7 lead at the technical timeout. The Warriors attempted to close the gap but some great work from Feore and Dormann sealed the third, 25-17.
Waterloo then turned the tables in the fourth and built an early 10-4 lead. Coming out of the technical timeout down 16-8, the Blues attempted to rally but were matched point-for-point as the Warriors evened the score at 2-2 with a 25-15 victory. Waterloo took that momentum into the fifth set, building an 8-4 lead at the switch and ultimately taking the match 15-10. Â
UP NEXT: The No. 8 Blues host the No. 4 Ryerson Rams next Sunday, January 20 at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. Opening serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
