The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team travels to Kingston to play the Queen's Gaels on Saturday, September 9 at Richardson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
The Blues are looking to gain their first win of the season. After a first week bye, Toronto fell to the Waterloo Warriors, 41-18, in head coach Greg Marshall's debut. Saturday's contest will mark the first time Marshall faces his former team, after serving as the Gaels defensive coordinator, defensive line and linebackers coach for three years (2014-17).
The Blues offence found their rhythm in their season opener as the game went on. Quarterback Clay Sequeira posted a career-high with 31 competitions for 361 yards and a touchdown. He also added 65 yards on the ground and a major. The unit can build off their performance because the Gaels defence has struggled early on. They rank last in yards allowed per game (550.5 yards) and second last against the pass (379).
An aspect that could work this week that was successful against Waterloo was the high tempo offence. U of T started to run quicker and shorter plays to keep the Warriors on their toes. It allowed the receivers to make plays and open the field up for Sequeira. Receivers Daniel Diodati and Willy Corby were highlighted, hauling a combined 14 balls for 164 yards and a touchdown.
The Gaels (1-1) are coming off a 44-18 loss to the No. 4 Laurier Golden Hawks. Toronto's defence will be facing Gaels pivot Nate Hobbs. Hobbs can put up numbers with the best in the OUA. The last time the two squads faced off last year at Varsity Stadium, the fifth-year quarterback went 32-for-40 for 436 yards and five touchdowns. The challenge for the defence will be getting consistent pressure on Hobbs, something Laurier did very well to hold him to a 50% completion rate last week.
Saturday's tilt has the potential to end in a high scoring affair, similar to last year's matchup that ended with a combine 97 points scored. Don't miss a single snap by watching the entire game on OUA.tv.
