BLUES COME BACK FALLS SHORT

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 5-3 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in pre-season play on Saturday evening (Sept. 15) at Varsity Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Gee-Gees struck first, scoring two goals in the second half of the opening frame. Ottawa then pushed their lead to 3-0 thanks to Medric Mercier's powerplay marker 34 seconds into the second period.

The Blues piled on the pressure and got on the board late in the second with a powerplay goal from first-year forward Kyle Clarke. Entering the final frame down 3-1, U of T wasted no time as Scott Kirton found the back of the net 44 seconds in. Less than 90 seconds later Nicholas Turenko tied the score at 3-3. Ottawa regained the lead though on Kevin Domingue penalty shot with less than five minutes to go in the third. They added an empty netter to seal the victory.

UP NEXT: The Blues continue pre-season action on Friday, September 21, when they travel to Kingston to battle the RMC Paladins. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
