The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team heads to the nation's capital to challenge the Carleton Ravens in OUA playoff action this Wednesday, October 24.
The match will be streamed live on OUA.tv, starting at 7:00 p.m.
The Blues booked their ticket to the OUA playoffs this past weekend with a 2-1 win over Nipissing Lakers and a 2-2 tie against Laurentian Voyageurs, securing the sixth seed in the OUA East with a 5-6-5 regular season record. Meanwhile, the Carleton Ravens finished in third place, amassing a 7-3-6 regular season record, just seven points ahead of the Blues.
"Our team did a great job to get two positive results this weekend," said Varsity Blues head coach Luciano Lombardi. "We're now drawn against a well-organized Carleton team in what is sure to be a tough OUA playoff game. Our focus is to do everything we can to prepare to produce the performance that gives us the best chance to be successful on Wednesday."
Toronto and Carleton met in two competitive matches earlier this season. The first saw the Varsity Blues come out on top of a 1-0 decision at home, before battling to a 0-0 draw at Carleton. Toronto's captain Chelsea Cheung proved to be the lone goal scorer for either team in both matchups.
Cheung, and fourth-year standout Natasha Klasios, will be key in shaking up the OUA landscape with a first-round playoff upset. The two veterans tied for 12th in OUA scoring, beating opposing keepers six times each. This brings Cheung's five-year career total to 22 goals, notching six for her third consecutive season, while Klasios' four-year tally adds up to 37.
U of T will need to be just as strong on their backline in order to compete with the Ravens rock-solid defence. Carleton was one of just three teams to register fewer than 10 goals against this season. Luckily, third-year Blues netminder Vanna Staggolis has shone this season, ranking fifth in saves in the OUA.
Should the Blues win on Wednesday night, U of T would then travel back to Ottawa, for an OUA quarter-final match versus top-seeded Gee-Gees on Sunday, October 28.
