Box Score The Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to the Western Mustangs on Saturday night (January 6) at Varsity Arena.
The first period was highlighted by the Blues controlling most of the play and outshooting the Mustangs 9-4.
Even with their few shots, the purple and white took advantage on the powerplay. Evra Levesque walked in from the point and went top corner to give them the 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Only 44 seconds into the second, Gabrielle De Serres made an outstanding move to get around a defender and sniped her first career OUA goal. The Blues previous three goals dating back to last night's contest against Windsor have all come from the De Serres sisters (Gabrielle and Mathilde).
At 4:13, Western's Megan Taylor was left all alone in the slot and she made no mistake to regain the advantage. The Mustangs were up 2-1 at the second intermission.
Six minutes into the third period, Levesque knocked in a rebound from a point shot for her second goal on the night to give the Mustangs the two-goal lead.
Toronto got back into the scoring column at the midway point of the third. Off a point shot, the puck deflected in front to Louie Bieman. In a one-on-one situation with Western's goalie Carmen Lasis, the freshmen faked her out and threw it into the open cage. Bieman's fifth goal of the season narrowed it to just one.
The Blues pinned the Mustangs in their zone late in the third, but weren't able to even things up.
Madeline Albert allowed three goals on 16 shots. It was only the third time the freshmen allowed three or more goals in 11 starts this season. While Western's Lasis made 20 saves for her third straight victory.
U of T's record slides to 7-0-6-1 (W-OTW-L-OTL) on the year, while the Mustangs keep pace with the best of the OUA at 9-1-3-2.
The Blues five-game home stand continues against the UOIT Ridgebacks (3-2-6-1) on Friday, January 12. The last time these two teams faced off in late November, Albert made 28 saves to hand Toronto the 2-1 win. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m., at Varsity Arena and can also be streamed on OUA.tv.
