BLUES DROP CLOSE BATTLE WITH NO. 8 GRYPHONS

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 5-4 to the No. 8 nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons on Friday, January 26 at Varsity Arena.
 
The loss puts the Blues at 8-14-1 in their season thus far, while Guelph advances to 17-5-1.
 
The Gryphons opened the floodgates with a backhand goal from Seth Swenson just three minutes into the contest, followed by another goal about three minutes later from Max McCutcheon.
 
The Blues would respond two minutes later though as rookie forward Scott Kirton driving towards the net and going five-hole on Guelph goalie Jason Da Silva.
 
The Gryphons extended their lead midway through the first period, capitalizing on a two-on-one as to put the score at 3-1.
 
However, Matt Campagna would score on a penalty shot one minute later to bring the contest to 3-2 going into the first intermission.
 
Less than a minute into the second period, Blues rookie forward Hunter Atchison finished a Kirton rebound to tie up the game at 3-3.
 
At the halfway point of the second period and on a power play, the Blues would take the lead with second-year forward Curtis Harvey quickly sniping the puck on net to make it 4-3.
 
But, the Gryphons took back their lead with a powerplay goal from Josh McFadden and another from Swenson and took a 5-4 lead into the second intermission.
 
A scoreless third frame saw Toronto outshoot Guelph 14-6, but neither team found the back of the net again.
 
Rookie netminder Frederic Foulem posted 21 saves in the loss.
 
The Varsity Blues return to action on tomorrow (Jan. 27) as they host the Ryerson Rams at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
