DAY, WEIDENFELDER JOIN GERMAN POWERHOUSE ECDC MEMMINGEN

Recent University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey graduates Taylor Day and Sonja Weidenfelder are taking their talents overseas as they have signed professional contracts with German powerhouse ECDC Memmingen of the Deutsche Fraune Eishockey Liga (DFEL).

A Kinesiology graduate, Day accomplished a great deal in her five seasons with the Varsity Blues (2012-17). In her final season, the dynamic scoring presence became just the eighth player in Varsity Blues women's hockey history to record 100 career points and the 10th player in program history to reach 50 career goals. A two-time OUA first team all-star, Day finished her career with 103 points on 54 goals, including 14 game-winning goals, and 49 assists.

"Being able to go on this journey with my best friend and my linemate is what makes this all so exciting," said the Ilderton, Ont., native. "We wanted to play overseas together and Memmingen has already begun to make us feel welcome but now it is on us to make the most of this opportunity."

Another scoring threat, Weidenfelder played five seasons with the Varsity Blues from 2011-16, appearing in 124 regular season games and tallying 74 points on 34 goals and 40 assists. The arts and science graduate also competed in 24 playoff games, registering eight points with five goals and six assists.

"It's not easy to get a chance like this as teams in this league can only play two imports during games, so we are very lucky and grateful to have the opportunity to do so with one of the best teams in Germany in Memmingen," said Weidenfelder. "There is no doubt our experiences with high-intensity training on and off the ice at U of T, while dealing with the stress of being a student at one of the top schools in Canada, will be vital in dealing with the demands of the professional game in Germany."

Last season ECDC Memmingen won the German Cup (DEB POKAL) and the Elite Women's Hockey League (EWHL) Supercup, which matched up the top eight European clubs in an international competition.

The pair will takeoff for Germany and begin training with ECDC Memmingen mid-August.
