BLUES DROP NARROW BATTLE WITH NO. 9 GRYPHONS

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 6-4 to the No. 9 nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons on Friday, December 1 at Varsity Arena.

An action-packed first period saw the two teams tied 3-3 after 20 minutes of action.

Rookie Gryphons forward Todd Winder opened the scoring 5:28 into the game as he capitalized on a Blues turnover in front of the net. Guelph took a two-goal lead four minutes later as Manny Dialedakis sent a pass across the slot to Seth Swenson, who made no mistake finding the back of the net.

Toronto got on the board 38 seconds later though as Dean Klomp found Max Lindsay all alone in the high slot and Lindsay one-timed it past the glove of Gryphons goalie Jason Da Silva.

Guelph restored the two-goal advantage less than a minute later as JP Velleneuve picked up a loose puck in front on shot it through traffic and in.

The Blues responded though with back-to-back goals. First, third-year forward Max Lindsay forced a turnover deep in the Gryphons zone and send a short-side shot past DaSilva. Then, with just 0.7 seconds remaining in the first period, sophomore defenceman Willy Paul evened the score, skating in off the blue line and burying a rebound.

Toronto took their first lead of the game 4:35 into the second period as Curtis Harvey corralled a centering pass from Jared Leslie in front of the Gryphons net.

Guelph took over from there though as Max McCutcheon scored a short-handed marker and Andrews Kopstals netted the eventual game-winner midway through the second period.

Winder added an insurance marker, his second goal of the game, 5:24 into the third period.

Rookie netminder Frederic Foulem made 27 saves for the Blues, while Da Silva ended with 23 saves on the night.

The Varsity Blues wrap up the first half of the season tomorrow night as they travel to St. Catharines, Ont., to take on the Brock Badgers. The puck drops at 7;15 p.m., with the game set to be streamed live on OUA.tv.
