The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team heads to the nation's capital to challenge the No. 7 Ottawa Gee-Gees in an OUA playoff showdown this Wednesday, October 25.
The Blues booked their ticket to the OUA playoffs this past weekend, securing the sixth seed with a 7-7-2 (W-L-D) regular season record. Meanwhile, the nationally ranked Gee-Gees finished third in the OUA East division, finishing with only one loss at 10-1-5.
Two competitive matches earlier this season saw the Varsity Blues drop a narrow 1-0 decision, before battling to a 2-2 draw at home versus the Gee-Gees.
Toronto's striking duo of third-year dynamo Natasha Klasios and fourth-year playmaker Chelsea Cheung both found the back of the Gee-Gees net in the midseason tie and will both be key in shaking up the OUA landscape with a first-round playoff upset.
Always a scoring threat, Klasios once again finished within the OUA top 10 in goal scoring, beating opposing keepers nine times to lift her three-season career total to a whopping 31. Meanwhile, Cheung matched her single-season career high, netting six goals for the Blue and White for the second consecutive season.
However, U of T will need to be just as strong on their backline in order to slow down one of the provinces most potent offences. Ottawa ranked second in the OUA in goals scored this season, amassing 40 markers through 16 regular season games.
Varsity Blues co-captains Laura Krkachovski and Christine Mulligan will be tasked with matching up against a Gee-Gees attack that saw five-players record three or more goals this season.
Should the Blues pull off the first-round playoff upset, U of T would then travel to Oshawa, Ont., for an OUA quarter-final match versus the defending champion UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday, October 29.
