Box Score Surrendering three third period goals, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team suffered their first loss of the OUA season falling 3-2 to the visiting UOIT Ridgebacks on Saturday evening (Oct. 21) at Varsity Arena.
Coming into the Saturday night showdown following an exciting overtime victory over the Queen's Gaels the night before, momentum began on the side of the Ridgebacks as the visitors opened the night outshooting the Blues 8-0 in the early going. First-year goaltender Frederic Foulem turned aside the early UOITÂ onslaught.
With just one minute remaining in the first period, first-year forward Luca Leone grabbed back momentum for the Blues, beating UOIT goalie Tyson Teichmann to carry a 1-0 lead into the first intermisison. Josh Graham and Ryan Kirkup picked up assists on the opening goal
Midway through the second, U of T's leading goal scorer from a season ago Aidan Wallace picked up his first of 2017-18 campaign, scoring on the powerplay to make it a 2-0 game after two. Defensive pair Willy Paul and Evan MacEachern assisted the poerplay marker.
However, in the third the Ridgebacks picked up the pace and would not be denied as Josh Maguire, Mike Robinson, and captain Danny Elser scored three in a row for UOIT.
Foulem was pulled with under a minute remaining as the Blues looked for an equalizer but time would expire on the comeback attempt.
Foulem ended the night with 24 saves, while Teichmann picked up 17 for the Ridgebacks.
The Varsity Blues will continue a four-game home stand with another doubleheader at Varsity Arena next weekend challenging the York Lions on Friday, October 27 before taking on the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, October 28. Puck drop for both nights is set for 7 p.m. with the action also being streamed live on OUA.tv.
