POWERPLAY PROPELS THINK PINK VICTORY

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team scored four powerplay and one shorthanded goal as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 5-1 in their 10th annual Think Pink game on Friday night (Jan. 27) at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues improve to 11-1-6-0 (W-OTW-L-OTL) and remain in sole possession of third place in the OUA standings.

The Blues women's hockey team has raised over $2500 in support of the campaign. Blues netminder Valencia Yordanov is also set to cut her hair at tomorrow afternoon's women's basketball halftime presentation.

Toronto was paced by team captain Kristi Riseley, who notched two goals and added one assist in the win. Blues leading scorer Taylor Day added one goal and one assist, while defencemen Rebecca Bourgeois and Julia Szulewka both had two assists on the night.

Day opened the scoring late in the first period as she received a stretch pass from Bourgeois for the breakaway. The fifth-year forward from Ilderton, Ont., made no mistake, burying the rebound after her first shot for her team-leading 12th goal of the season.

Toronto was up 1-0 heading into the first intermission.

Blues veteran Katherine Gale extended Toronto's lead 7:27 into the second frame as she buried a rebound off a Bourgeois point shot on the powerplay.

Fellow third-year forward Meagan O'Brien put the Blues up by three at the 14:41 mark of the second period. The Brampton, Ont., native finished off a passing play down low with linemates Kassie Roche and Riseley for her second goal of the season.

Riseley put the Blues up 4-0 late in the second frame as she made good on a nice tic-tac-toe play from Szulewska and Day, also on the man advantage.

UOIT captain Mikaeli Cavell spoiled the shut out, sending a nice shot five hole just 46 seconds into the third period, but Riseley tallied her second of the game seven minutes later, tipping a Szulewska point shot on the powerplay.

Yordanov made 21 saves in her first win of 2017.

The Varsity Blues honoured breast cancer survivor Lydia Modonado with a special ceremonial puck drop prior to tonight's game.

Varsity Blues hockey student coordinator Madison Danford also cut her hair in support of the cause during the first intermission.

The Varsity Blues return to action Sunday night (Jan. 29) as they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
