Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 3-1 on Friday night (Jan. 20) at Varsity Arena for their first home win of the OUA regular season.
The game kicked off the Bell Let's Talk weekend for the Varsity Blues in support of raising mental health awareness and served as the final UTSU Frost Week game to celebrate the new semester.
Â
Windsor opened the scoring in the first with a goal from second-year Tyson Ness just 90 seconds into the Friday night showdown.
Â
Eight minutes into the first period and on a power play, Blues rookie defenceman Willy Paul took a shot from the blue line which veteran Dean Klomp deflected past Lancers goaltender Kris Joyce to even the score. The powerplay marker was Klomp's fifth goal of the year.
Â
Just under two minutes into the third period, U of T forward Casey Knight scored what would be the game-winner off a behind the net pass from second-year Ryan Kirkup to put Toronto up 2-1.
Â
Then with only thirty seconds left in the contest, second-year Aidan Wallace continued his hot streak and solidified the Varsity Blues win by scoring an empty net goal. The insurance marker was his seventh goal over the past five games.
Â
Fourth-year goaltender Michael Nishi posted 25 saves for his first win of the season.
The Blue and White are back in action tomorrow night (Jan. 21) to take on the Western Mustangs at Varsity Arena. Puck drops at 7 p.m with the game streamed live on OUA.tv.
