MEN’S HOCKEY DROPS PENALTY-FILLED AFFAIR WITH GUELPH

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 5-2 to the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday, January 15 at Varsity Arena.

Guelph got on the score sheet first with a goal from Mark Raycroft just three minutes into the game.

On a power play rush, U of T veteran forward Russell Turner drove up the ice, passing the puck in front of the net to Aidan Wallace, who buried the puck past Gryphons goalie Scott Stajcer.

With just four minutes left in the first period, another fight broke out this time involving Turner and Stajcer with Stajcer being ejected from the game.

Two minutes into the second period, Gryphons junior Michael Stevens scored a short-handed goal to put his team up 2-1.

Then, about halfway through the second period on a power play, Gryphons Trevor Morbeck earned himself a goal after deflecting the puck into the net off Blues defenceman.

Wallace scored his second goal, and sixth in the past four games, just a minute into the third period off a beautiful pass from line mate Dean Klomp.

However, Gryphons Andres Kopstals scored just under two minutes later to further Guelph's lead.

Gryphons sophomore Cody Thompson would solidify the Guelph win by scoring with just four minutes left in the game.

Blues rookie goalie Evan Johnson posted 32 saves in the loss.

The Blue and White are back in action Friday, January 20 as they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. Puck drops at 7 pm.
