Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team dropped a 6-3 decision to the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday night (Jan. 12) at Gryphons Centre Arena.
Â
Three second period goals from the Gryphons, all on the powerplay, would be the difference in the loss.
Â
The Blues wasted no time to open the game as Mathew Campagna connected a nice pass with fellow second-year forward Aidan Wallace 41 seconds into the contest. Wallace one-timed the puck into the top corner of the net for his fourth goal in the past three games.
Â
Toronto was up 1-0 after 20 minutes of action.
Â
U of T struck again 6:45 into the second frame as sophomore forward Ryan Kirkup tipped in an Evan MacEachern point shot on the powerplay. The Gryphons responded, however, as Trevor Morbeck found the back of the net on the man advantage four minutes later.
Â
Guelph took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission after back-to-back powerplay goals from Josh McFadden and Morbeck late in the second period.
Â
The Blues evened the score early in the third period as a long flick pass from MacEachern found Campagna deep in Gryphons territory. Campagna rifled a shot low through Gryphons goalie Scott Stajcer for the equalizer.
Â
The Gryphons went ahead again as Morbeck netted his third of the game, the eventual game-winner, midway through the third period. Michael Stevens added an insurance marker and an empty-netter from Mark Raycroft rounded out the scoring. Â
Â
Fourth-year goalie Andrew Hunt posted 35 saves in the loss.
Â
The two squads complete the home-and-home as Toronto hosts Guelph this Sunday, January 15 at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 3 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale
