Claiming the Argo Cup with an impressive 45-18 victory over the York Lions, the Blues enter the second half of the season with a great deal of momentum and aspirations of improving their current 1-3 record.
Toronto will look to continue to utilize its rushing attack, which now sits among the top five in the OUA averaging 171.5 yards per game. This past weekend truly displayed the Blues depth in the run game with third-year running back Alex Malone picking up his second straight 100-yard rushing performance, OUA newcomer Kaleb Leach also surpassing the century mark, and fifth-year quarterback Marcus Hobbs recording three of his five touchdowns on the ground.
Meanwhile, receivers Rahul Madan and Anthony Naccarato have benefitted from the strong ground game, taking advantage of holes in defensive secondaries. Currently both receivers rank in the OUA top 10 in both yards per game and average yards per reception with Naccarato leading the province in the latter, averaging 19.4 per catch.
If the offence can continue to roll, expect the defence to continue to shine with the currently winless Queen's Gaels holding one of the worst producing offences in the OUA, ranking last in total rushing yards and second-last in total yards per game.
Queen's dual-threat quarterback Nate Hobbs provides many of the same offensive threats as his brother, U of T starting quarterback Marcus Hobbs, and has averaged over six yards a carry, while putting up over 230 yards in the air.
But the Blues ball-hawking defence, which ranks fifth in the OUA in total turnovers with nine (four interceptions, five fumble recoveries), should cause plenty of trouble for the third-year pivot.
Keep an eye on Toronto tackle leader Adrian Bernard, who sits sixth in the OUA with 25 total tackles and third in tackles for loss, and defensive back standouts Richard Gillespie and Nick Hallett who have three of the four Blues interceptions so far this season.
The Varsity Blues will remain on the road following their showdown with Queen's, as they travel West on the 401 to take on the Windsor Lancers next Saturday, October 1. The game will be streamed live on OUA.tv with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
