DAY NAMED OUA FIRST TEAM ALL-STAR

University of Toronto leading scorer Taylor Day earned her first career all-star honour and three Varsity Blues rookies were recognized as Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced women's hockey awards on Wednesday afternoon.

Blues netminder Valencia Yordanov, defenceman Cristine Chao and forward Jessica Robichaud were all named members of the OUA all-rookie team as well.

A fourth-year forward from Ilderton, Ont., Day led the Blues and ranked fourth in the OUA with 15 goals and 10 assists for 25 points in 24 regular season games. The fourth-year kinesiology major led Toronto and ranked second in the conference with four powerplay markers in 2015-16.

Day registered five multi-point games, including a season-high two goals and one assist in two games this season.

Yordanov starred between the pipes for the Blues in her rookie season. The Port Coquitlam, B.C., native played in 19 of 24 games, ranking fourth in the OUA with a 1.48 goals against average while also holding an impressive .939 save percentage.

A mathematical and physical sciences major Yordanov made a season-high 33 saves, earning her first career shut out in Toronto's 2-0 victory at Queen's on Feb. 14.

Chao, a first-year commerce major from Toronto, led all OUA defencemen with 15 assists in her first year with the Blues. She notched two assists in four games and was a vital member of Toronto's powerplay, which ranked third in the province this season. 

Robichaud also had a fantastic season as U of T's top rookie forward with four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 24 games played.  The Whitby, Ont., native and life science major notched a season-high two goals and one assist when the Blues defeated Waterloo 4-1 on the road on Feb. 6.
