UNDERDOG BLUES FALL IN GAME 3 OT

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey teams underdog playoff run ended Sunday night (Feb. 28) in London as they dropped Game 3 of their OUA West semifinal in overtime, 4-3, to the second-seeded Western Mustangs.

Following a shaky first period which saw Toronto outshot 16-7 while also falling behind 1-0 off a shorthanded marker from Mustangs forward Trent Ouellette, the Varsity Blues offence caught a spark in the second with back-to-back powerplay goals.

First, battling behind the Western net U of T forward Patrick Marsh sent a well-placed shot off Mustangs goalie Greg Dodds to even the game at one goal apiece. The tying goal also marked Marsh's fourth goal of the postseason.

Then just three minutes later, Varsity Blues assistant captain Dylan Heide attacked from the blueline showcasing outstanding patience to beat Dodds top shelf taking a 2-1 Toronto lead.

Before the period ended, Robert Polesello countered for the Mustangs to even the game 2-2 heading into the final frame of regulation.

The goals continued in the third with Western playoff scoring leader Andrew Goldberg notching his fourth goal of the playoffs to put the Mustangs back up by one, but Toronto forward Max Lindsay responded for the Blues, quickly converting the Josh Villaflor point shot into a game-tying marker.

Tied 3-3 and needing overtime, Western Mustangs captain David Corrente played the role of spoiler for the Varsity Blues, beating goaltender Andrew Hunt with a deceptive point shot to secure the Game 3 victory four minutes into the extra frame.

Despite the loss, Hunt delivered an incredible performance for the Blues in the decisive Game 3 stopping 43 shots. Mustangs goalie Dodds finished the night with 25.
