ATKINSON SCORES 32 IN UPSET OF NO. 9 GAELS

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team ended their regular season in style, upsetting the No. 9 Queen's Gaels in Kingston 75-70 Saturday night (Feb. 27).

After falling behind 16-13 after the first quarter, Blues scoring leader Rahshida Atkinson sparked the Varsity Blues with an enormous effort in the second. Sinking three baskets from behind the arc, Atkinson finished the quarter scoring 11 of her 13 first half points while lifting the Blues to a 30-29 lead at the half.

Toronto then extended their lead in the third quarter, forcing the Gaels to commit 10 turnovers while utilizing their continued offensive pressure to put Queen's into early foul trouble, going up 54-50 at the quarter break.

And in the fourth, several Blues, including Atkinson, would sink crucial free throw attempts, holding off a Gaels late game comeback attempt to ensure the upset over the nationally-ranked opponents.

Atkinson led all scorers on the night with 32 points including five three-pointers while adding three rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

Diedre Edwards followed that up for the Blues collecting 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals while forwards Charlotte Collyer and Emily Piccini finished with eight and seven points, respectively.

The Gaels were paced by Jenny Wright who notched 28 points to go along with nine rebounds, five steals, and four blocks. Emily Hazlett earned 13 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

The Varsity Blues will now look to play spoiler in the OUA playoffs as they hit the road for a first-round matchup this Wednesday, March 2. Their opponent and tipoff are still to be determined.
