Riding a five-game winning streak, the No. 4 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team continue a torrent push for playoff positioning this weekend, welcoming the Laurier Golden Hawks to Varsity Arena Friday night (Feb. 12) before hitting the road Sunday (Feb. 14) to take on the Queen's Gaels.
Puck drop for Friday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with advance tickets on saleÂ
here. Sunday's game in Kingston is set for a 3:30 p.m. start and will be streamed live on OUA.tv.
Currently in third place in the OUA with three games in hand over the second-place Nipissing Lakers, Toronto stands with a 10-3-4-3Â (W-OTW-L-OTL) record on the season.
As a team the Varsity Blues continue to display an overall dominance that has them in the OUA top five in several key categories, including goals per game (2.45), power play percentage (15.6%), penalty kill percentage (91%) and goals allowed (36). This complete team effort has allowed Toronto to flourish as the regular season nears its end.
Fourth-year forward Taylor Day (10 G, 9 A) has played a major role in the Blues current five-game streak, collecting a point in four of the five games including the game-winner against Ryerson this past Thursday (Feb. 4). Â Currently seventh in OUA scoring and just one point shy of the 20 point plateau, Day will no doubt be looking to break her career-high of 21 (11 G, 10 A), which she achieved in the 2013-14 season.
Another positive for the Blues offence this season has been the strong play of several first-year players including forward Jessica Robichaud, who spring boarded into Toronto's top five scorers this past weekend, collecting four points (3 G, 1 A) in victories over Ryerson and Waterloo. The former Leaside Wildcat has been able to utilize her 5-foot-7 frame and combined with high-energy line mates, second-year Lauren Straatman and fifth-year veteran Jacqueline Scheffel, she has become a staple for the Blues in front of opposing goaltenders, creating chaos for OUA defences.
Meanwhile, the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks, who sit in a tie for sixth in the OUA with a 10-2-8-1 record, will look to their own scoring leader Jessie Hurrell. The fifth-year forward has been on a tear over the teams' last five games, collecting seven points (1 G, 6 A) to assist Laurier to a 4-1 record over that stretch. With over 110 career points combining her regular season and post-season play, Hurrell will be crucial to the Hawks own late season push up the standings.
Following the Varsity Blues home and away weekend, Toronto will next welcome the York Lions to Varsity Arena next Friday (Feb. 19) before heading East on the 401 for their season finale versus the UOIT Ridgebacks on the Saturday (Feb. 20). Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. puck drops. Â
