Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 5-1 to the Ryerson Rams in their annual Downtown Showdown Hockey School Day on Wednesday, November 23 at Varsity Arena.
Over 3,500 students from elementary schools from across the GTA were in attendance for the high-scoring affair.Â
Â
The Blues opened the floodgates with a goal from sophomore Matt Campagna, his second of the year, off his own rebound that was tipped in front of the net by a Ryerson defender.
Â
However, just 14 seconds later, Ryerson's Alex Basso scored to tie up the game and the two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Â
Blues veteran Casey Knight had great chance in the second period on what was almost a short breakaway goal, but couldn't get the puck past Ryerson goalie Taylor Dupuis.
Â
But, Ryerson would take the lead with a goal from Vince Figliomeni about 15 minutes into the second period.Â
Â
Early in the third, Ryerson's Aaron Armstrong scored a goal to put the Rams up 3-1. The Blues almost scored in the third period when Knight charged for the net and gave a nice pass to Matt Heffernan who was in front of the net, but was unable to finish.
Â
Ryerson added two more goals from Matt Mistele and Armstrong to round out the scoring.
Â
Blues goalie Andrew Hunt posted 29 saves in the loss.
Â
The Blues are back in action this Friday, November 25 to take on the second-place Lions at Varsity Arena at 7 pm. The game will serve as U of T's annual Holiday Toy Toss event, with all donations benefitting the University of Toronto Students' Union food bank, supporting all students and families in need on the St. George Campus.
