2015-16 OUA first team all-star Taylor Day picked up right where she left off last season scoring a powerplay marker in the Blues 2-0 season opening victory over the Waterloo Warriors. Day now sits at 40 career OUA regular season goals as a Blue as she enters her fifth and final season of eligibility.
Meanwhile, last season all-rookie team members Jessica Robichaud and Valencia Yordanov also continued to showcase why they received such prestigious honours a year ago. Robichaud picked up the game-winning goal versus Waterloo, while Yordanov recorded her second career shutout making 23 saves.
U of T will require another balanced attack when they take on the Gryphons who have already scored seven goals in two games this season, dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to the Western Mustangs before earning a 5-0 shutout over the Laurentian Voyageurs.
Finishing tied for seventh in OUA points last season, veteran forward Kelly Gribbons has also maintained her offensive punch picking up a goal and an assist in both of the Gryphons first two contests placing her in a tie for the league lead thus far.
Joining her at the top of the OUA is third-year forward Kaitlin Lowy who utilized a three-point game, including an impressive short-handed marker versus the Voyageurs, to leapfrog her way up the leaderboard.
The impressive scoring touch up front for the Gryphons is then backed by Guelph goaltender and 2015-16 CIS player of the year Valerie Lamenta. Last season Lamenta led the country in GAA (0.99), save percentage (.957), and winning percentage (.889) in 18 regular season starts.
Following the home opener the Varsity Blues will return to the road to challenge the UOIT Ridgebacks on Friday, October 28 followed by the Queen's Gaels on Saturday, October 29. Both games will be streamed live on OUA.tv.
