PLAYOFF PUSH FOR SOCCER THIS WEEKEND

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's soccer teams host their regular season finales and will be looking to solidify playoff position this weekend (Oct. 22-23) at Varsity Stadium.

Men's Preview:

The Blues men, who are ranked No. 7 in this week's CIS polls, close out their regular season on Saturday when they host the No. 9 Carleton Ravens in a battle for a first-round playoff bye. Action kicks off at 3:15 p.m.

U of T will also celebrate their graduating players in a special pre-game ceremony on Saturday.

Handing the No. 3 Ryerson Rams their first loss of the season, the Varsity Blues men's soccer team have placed their playoff fate in their own hands, holding a two-point lead on the Ravens for second place in the OUA East division. The results and positioning following this final weekend of action will prove to be critical as both teams vie for that ever-important first round bye.

Blues captain Lukas MacNaughton has continued to prove why he was named a CIS second team all-Candian a year ago, adding two goals in a 4-0 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs while assisting the game-winner in Toronto's upset of the Rams this past week. With 14 different goal scorers for the Blues this season MacNaughton currently leads the team with seven goals, however, the defensive midfielder has also played a key role on the back end where the Blues continue to be a force having allowed just nine goals to opponents through 15 games this season.

Goalkeeper Mark Rogal continues to lead the province in clean sheets picking up his ninth of the season this past week versus the Voyageurs. Having made 52 saves this season, the third-year finance major also ranks second in the OUA in save percentage (.852) and third in goals-against average (0.60).

Women's Preview:

Toronto's women will also be challenging the Ravens on Saturday followed by the No. 8 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday, October 23.

The Blues will celebrate their graduating seniors on Sunday and will also be raising money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation as apart of their Think Pink game.

Sunday's match will be streamed live on OUA.tv, with both games scheduled for a 1 p.m. kick off.

Toronto picked up a crucial 2-0 win over the Rams this past week and now the Blues will look to home field advantage to help jump even further in the standings.

Sophomore sensation Natasha Klasios has continued to prove why she was named OUA East rookie of the year a season ago, currently sitting third in OUA scoring with 10 goals. The dynamic striker also ranks third in the OUA in shots (53) consistently challenging opposing goalkeepers.

Meanwhile, fellow striker Chelsea Cheung has come on strong down the final stretch of the season, scoring four goals over the Blues past five matches including last Wednesday's game-winner over the Rams.

The Ravens will be a good matchup for the Blues sitting just four points ahead in the standings. Toronto will need to take advantage of Carleton's undisciplined play as the Ravens have accumulated 11 yellow cards this season, the third worst total in the OUA, in order to leapfrog them.

Following the weekend, OUA playoff action is scheduled to begin net Wednesday, October 26 with the OUA quarter-finals scheduled for next Sunday, October 30. All home playoff games will be streamed live on OUA.tv.
