The University of Toronto Varsity Blue's men's hockey team fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Waterloo Warriors in their home opener on Thursday, October 13 at Varsity Arena.
Â
The Blues opened the floodgates with a power play goal by second year forward Aiden Wallace off a rebound shot from Corey Jackson. But with less than a minute left in the first period, Zac Coulter got the Warriors on the board to end the first in a deadlock.
Â
Â
Toronto goalie Andrew Hunt opened the second period with a beautiful cross crease save to keep the game even; however, the Warriors had another chance and this time got the puck past Hunt with a one-timer go-ahead goal from Riley Sonnenburg.
Â
Â
U of T had a brief two-man advantage in the second period, generating some great chances, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Late in the second, seemingly switching places with the Warriors, the Blues fought off a five on three power play themselves. Waterloo led 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Â
Blues veteran Russell Turner had a great chance with a shorthanded breakaway early in the third frame, but Warriors netminder Mike Morrison shut him down. About halfway through the third, mirroring their opponents, Hunt robbed Warriors Cam Nicoll of a breakaway goal.
Â
With less than nine minutes left in regulation time, the Warriors scored their third goal off the stick of Matt Amadio. Not going down without a fight, Toronto's Wallace scored his second of the night on a two-man advantage, burying the rebound off a Charlie Connell point shot.
Â
Â
Just over a minute later, and still on the power play, Josh Hanson let loose a rocket shot from the point that bounced off the glass to the front of the net and was batted in by a Warriors defenceman, giving the Blues a much needed equalizer.
Â
The two overtime periods solved nothing as the game headed into a shoot out. Waterloo's Sonnenburg and Joey Champigny scored to secure the victory.
Â
Hunt ended the night with 35 saves.
Â
The Blue and White are back in action tomorrow night, Friday, October 14 as they travel to take on the York Lions. Puck drops at 7 pm.
