Box Score After a tough start in London, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team were unable to complete the comeback falling 3-2 to the Western Mustangs Thursday night.
A strong forecheck from the Mustangs caused trouble for U of T early in the first allowing Western to turn two defensive zone turnovers into two goals with Connor Chartier and Shaun Furlong recording the markers for the Mustangs.
However, third-year forward Dean Klomp would cut into the Western lead midway through the second period when he was able to break out shorthanded. After sending his first shot off the far post, Klomp corralled the rebound and made no mistake, potting his seventh goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game heading into the final frame.
Western forward Noah Shwartz restored the two goal lead for the Mustangs at the midway point of the third, but under three minutes later rookie forward Ryan Kirkup would get the Varsity Blues back in it with a deflection goal off the strong point shot of Josh Hanson.
From there, Toronto applied endless pressure on the Mustangs but goaltender Greg Dodds stood tall making 25 saves on the night.
Toronto goaltender Andrew Hunt would finish the night with 33 saves.
The Varsity Blues now return home to Varsity Arena welcoming the Guelph Gryphons to Toronto Saturday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
