Box Score Second-year forward Russell Turner scored both goals and Brett Willows posted 49 saves as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Ryerson Rams 2-1 in Game 1 of an OUA West quarter-final series on Wednesday night (Feb. 11) at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The Varsity Blues host Game 2 Saturday night (Feb. 14) at Varsity Arena. Advance tickets are on sale here. The game will be streamed live on OUA.tv, starting with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. Â
Turner opened the scoring midway through the first period when he tipped in a Lane Werbowski point shot. The Rams answered right back, however, as Mitch Gallant one-timed a Robert Visca pass into the net.
Turner struck again three minutes later, wiring a shot past Ryerson netminder Troy Passingham, and Toronto took a 2-1 lead into the second period.
A scoreless second period saw Ryerson control the play for the majority of the frame. Willows came up with numerous saves to keep Toronto in the lead heading into the final frame.
Michael Markovic tipped in a Dylan Heide point shot early in the third period, but the goal was called back due to high sticking. Willows continued to stand on his head and midway through the period got some help from defenceman Charlie Connell, who cleared a loose puck out of harm's way.Â
