Box Score The No. 6 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team fell 1-0 in extra time to the No. 2 York Lions in OUA semi-final action on Saturday afternoon at York Stadium.
Toronto will now face the Ryerson Rams, who fell 1-0 to the McMaster Marauders in the other semifinal, in the OUA bronze-medal match tomorrow at 11 a.m. Hardware won't be the only thing up for grabs, as the winner of the third-place tilt will advance to the 2015 CIS national championship next week (Nov. 12-15), also hosted at York.
The host Lions and the Marauders have already solidified their spots on the national stage.
Fourth-year Blues goalkeeper Rab Bruce-Lockhart, who was honoured as an OUA East first team all-star this past week, was spectacular in the semifinal. The Victoria, B.C., native made 11 saves, many point blank, in the 120-minute battle.
Fourth-year Lions striker Michael Cox proved to be the game's hero, finding his way into Toronto's 18-yard box in the 111th minute and firing a shot into the bottom left corner of the net. It marks the second time in as many years that the Lions have topped the Blues in semi-final action.
The Blues had a great chance to open the scoring in the 20th minute as Nirun Sivananthan sent a nice cross to Jason Cordeiro, but York goalkeeper Colm Vance was there to keep the game scoreless.
The Lions were awarded a free kick in the 24th minute, but Jonathan Lao's attempt went right into the arms of Bruce-Lockhart.
Three minutes later, York's Devante Walker found Cox in the box but he rang his shot off the cross bar. Â The Lions had back-to-back corner kick opportunities in the 30th minute, but Bruce-Lockhart kept the ball out of Toronto's net.
The Lions continued to press with another free kick opportunity and lots of pressure in the 18-yard box. They almost went ahead before the half expired, but Joey Cicchillo was called offside. Bruce-Lockhart posted eight first-half saves and the two teams were scoreless after 45 minutes of action.
York opened the second half with a couple of early corner and free kick opportunities, but Bruce-Lockhart came up with the stops and Lukas MacNaughton had a nice clearing attempt from the back line.
OUA all-star midfielder Nikolay Saveliev had a Varsity Blues free kick minutes later, but Vance came up with the save. Bruce-Lockhart continued to deny the Lions. In the 64th minute, Cox found himself with a point-blank shot on Toronto's net, but Bruce-Lockhart came up with the spectacular stop.
The Blues began to pressure in the last 10 minutes of regulation. Another Nikolay Saveliev free kick found its way into the box, and tension rose as the deadlock continued. A final Saveliev free kick was safely handled by Vance and regulation ended in a 0-0 draw.
York's Jarek Whiteman had the best chance of the first overtime frame, but some great defensive work from Koosha Nazeemi denied the chance before a clean break on net.
Then, after Cox's go-ahead goal, Toronto nearly evened the score in the dying minutes but rookie striker Devante Brown's shot hit the side of the net.Â
