The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 5-4 on Friday night (Nov. 6) at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues improve to 3-4-1 in the early goings of the OUA season.

The Blues opened the scoring 1:53 into the game when team captain Andrew Doyle finished off a play down low. Waterloo evened things up with a Colin Behenna shorthanded marker midway through the frame, but the Blues bounced right back as second-year forward Max Flanagan notched his first career goal to give the home team a 2-1 advantage at the first intermission.

Toronto wasted no time padding their lead as third-year forward Dean Klomp buried a Matt Campagna pass just seven seconds into the second period.

The Warriors answered the call and tied the game once again with two goals off the stick of Andrew Smith midway through the period.

U of T picked up the pace towards the end of the second period and took the lead for good. With 1:24 remaining in the frame, defenceman Charlie Connell finished off a nice pass from Ryan Kirkup to give Toronto the lead and 43 seconds later, Campagna notched what would be the eventual game-winner.

The Blues were up 5-3 heading into the final frame.

Waterloo's Stephen Silas scored early in the third period to bring the game within one, but that was all they could muster as Toronto held on for the one-goal victory.

Third-year netminder Michael Nishi made 20 saves in the win.

The Varsity Blues are back in action tomorrow night when they host the No. 4 McGill Redmen at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
