Box Score Fourth-year forwards Christian Finch and Patrick Marsh scored two goals each, while goalie Andrew Hunt posted 48 saves and three in the shootout as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 5-4 on Friday night (Nov. 27) in Thunder Bay, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve to 5-7-2 and move into a three-way tie for seventh place in the OUA West division.
Marsh opened the scoring 5:59 into the game, but the Thunderwolves answered right back in what would prove to be a see-saw affair. Lakehead added a late powerplay marker and took a 2-1 advantage into the first intermission.
Finch notched his first of the game 2:12 into the second frame, but the Thunderwolves restored their lead four minutes later with a breakaway goal from Billy Jenkins.
Toronto responded as Finch evened it up once again at the 12:43 mark and Marsh would add his season on the man advantage as Toronto took the one-goal lead after 40 minutes of play.
The Thunderwolves evened the score with a goal off the stick of Natan Cull early in the third period. Regulation ended in a 4-4 deadlock and the game headed to overtime.
Overtime was action packed but solved nothing and a shootout was needed to decide the winner.
First-year forward Mathew Campagna was the lone goal scorer and Hunt stood tall, stopping all three Thunderwolves en route to the victory.
The Varsity Blues complete the Thunder Bay road trip with another game versus the Thunderwolves tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
