The Blues enter the weekend undefeated, sitting atop the OUA standings with a perfect 7-0 record to start the 2015-16 season. The Blues reached their highest national ranking since the 2003-04 season this week.
U of T has carried with them an outstanding combination of both offensive and defensive standouts and will continue to lean on their veteran leaders in the weekend doubleheader.
Up front, Blues fourth-year forwards Kristi Riseley and Taylor Day have shot to the top of the OUA leaderboard in points, with both tied for the lead with nine points apiece. In sharing the OUA lead the two also share similar stat lines with four goals and five assists.
Trailing the two by just one point is fifth-year forward Sonja Weidenfelder, who leads both the Blues and the OUA with six goals. Together, the veteran forwards provide the kind of firepower that has lifted Toronto to the top of the OUA with 22 goals this season, a total that the team will be looking to add to when they take on the Badgers and Warriors.
The Blues have also excelled defensively, adding just another reason to their perfect start to the season. Veteran fifth-year defenceman April Looije has been a stabilizing force on the blue line, while first-year Cristine Chao and third-year Autumn Garnham have added additional playmaking abilities from the backend.
Strong goaltending from rookies Valencia Yordanov and Hailey Farrelly, who together share a 0.73 goals against average and .967 save percentage in six games, round out U of T's full-team effort.
The visiting Brock Badgers will be first in line looking to end the Blues winning streak, while continuing their own following a 3-0 win against York which lifted their record to 3-5 on the season.
The Badgers will be in tough against the strong defensive Blues as Brock currently ranks second-last in the OUA in goals scored this season. The team is yet to find their primary goal scorer as eight different players have found the back of the net. Sophie Herbert and Bronwyn O'Neill have scored multiple goals for the Badgers.
Brock has found success drawing penalties though, sitting second in the OUA in powerplay opportunities, which will lead to their best chance at solving this Blues attack.
Following the dual with Brock, Toronto will welcome the Warriors who currently hold a 4-3-1 record putting them in sixth place in the OUA.
The Warriors offer a similar offensive threat to the Blues, currently ranking third in the OUA in goals scored. Forward Kaitlyn McDonell has proven to be a serious playmaker for Waterloo, leading the OUA in assists with seven while fellow forward Paula LaGamba has found herself on the end of McDonell's passes the most leading the Warriors with four goals.
In net, Toronto will look to solve goaltender Rebecca Bouwhuis, who enters the game filled with confidence following a 29-save 3-1 victory over UOIT in the team's last outing. Bouwhuis currently holds a 3-2 record this season with a 1.42 goals against average and .951 save percentage.
