BLUES FALL TO NO. 9 STANGS

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team dropped a 3-2 double overtime decision to the No. 9 nationally ranked Western Mustangs on Friday night (Oct. 23) at Varsity Arena.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 2-2-1, while the Mustangs improve to 4-0-0 in the early goings of the season.

Tied 2-2 heading into double overtime, Western's Alex Micallef proved to be the game's hero, scoring on a 4-on-3 powerplay 1:37 into the double OT frame.

After a scoreless first period, third-year forward Dean Klomp broke the deadlock just 23 seconds into the second frame, intercepting a pass behind Western's net and wrapping it around to bounce the puck off the back of the Mustangs goalie and into the mesh.

The Mustangs evened the scoring 12 minutes later when Matt Marantz found the back of the net on the powerplay. The game was tied 1-1 after 40 minutes of action.

The Blues notched the go-ahead goal midway through the third period when Connor Cleverley finished off a nice play, assisted by Patrick Marsh and Charlie Connell; however, the Mustangs pulled their goalie with just under two minutes remaining and Marantz evened it up with 1:23 to go in regulation.

Blues netminder Michael Nishi posted 37 saves in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, October 30 as they travel to St. Catharines, Ont., to take on the Brock Badgers. Game time is set for 7:15 p.m.
