After narrowly missing the playoffs for the past two seasons, the Varsity Blues are ready to make a run for the post-season.
"We missed out last year and were left with a very bitter feeling about that," said Varsity Blues head coach John Barrett, who spent the summer as the head coach of the Canadian junior team. "I think we have a good group this year with a mixture of experience and new faces."
Fourth-year middle Aidan Haslett has been named the team's captain this season. He will look to lead with a veteran middle corps, including fifth-year Nathaniel Virgo, and third-year player Zia Karim.
Toronto native Will Colucci returns for his third season and will serve as the Blues starting right side hitter. Colucci led the Blues in 2013-14, averaging 3.97 points per set.
Fifth-year transfer Stefan Ristic will look to make an immediate impact on the Blues roster, after playing four seasons with the Ryerson Rams. Ristic, a 6-foot-5 left side from Belgrade, will lead a young group of outside hitters, including sophomores Thomas Meier and Alex Ferris, who makes the switch from libero to left, as well as rookies Ken Dobson and Perry Ni.
Fifth-year veteran Aleksa Miladinovic returns to the Blues after a one-year hiatus and will look to steer Toronto's offence as their starting setter. Miladinovic, who also transferred after three seasons (2010-13) with Ryerson, averaged 8.20 assists per set for the Blues in 2013-14.
Andrew Kos joins the Blues from a strong Pakmen Volleyball Club and will assume the role of starting libero this season. Kos won two indoor national titles with the Pakmen and won the 2013 18U Canadian beach volleyball championship.
