The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team notched a big 6-2 victory over the Concordia Stingers on Saturday night (Oct. 10) at Varsity Arena.

Third-year forward Russell Turner scored two goals and added one assist, while team captain Andrew Doyle also had two goals on the night. Fourth-year veteran Patrick Marsh and rookie forward Mathew Campagna both had one goal and two assists in the victory.

The Stingers opened the scoring just 43 seconds into the contest when Frederic Roy one-timed a nice 2-on-1 pass past Blues net minder Michael Nishi.

Toronto got on the board midway through the frame when Campagna dropped the puck to Turner, who wired it into the top corner. Concordia answered right back however, finishing off a similar 2-on-1 play with a Alexandros Soumakis goal. The Stingers led 2-1 after 20 minutes.

The Blues tied things up just 21 seconds into the second period when Marsh fired a shot five-hole right off a face-off for U of T's first power play marker of the season. Doyle then gave the Blues the lead less than two minutes later, finishing off a nice cross-crease pass from Campagna. Toronto was up 3-2 heading into the final frame.

U of T notched another two quick goals to open the third period. Campagna whacked in a rebound at the side of the net on the power play 2:25 into the third, and Turner finished off a nice 2-on-1 chance with Marsh just over two minutes later.

Up 5-2 with 3:30 remaining on the clock, Concordia pulled their goalie and with two Toronto players in the penalty box, had a 6-on-3 opportunity. The Blues stood tall though as Doyle stripped the Stinger of the puck and skated it down the ice for the empty netter.

Nishi posted 34 saves in Toronto's first win of the season.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Friday, October 16 as they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Warriors. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
