The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team went 2-for-2 on the powerplay as they defeated the Brock Badgers 4-0 on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 4) at Varsity Arena.

Second-year Blues netminder Michael Nishi made 27 saves in his first career shutout victory.

With the win, the Blues improve to 7-8-1 and move into sixth place in the West with a game in hand over the fifth-place Badgers (8-8-1).

The Blues opened the scoring just 1:56 into the game when third-year forward Christian Finch (Markham, Ont.) banged in a rebound off a Jeff Brown (Toronto) shot on the powerplay.

Toronto extended their lead towards the end of the frame when Russell Turner (Jasper, Alta.) capitalized on a Michael Markovic (Scarborough) rebound, again on the man advantage. U of T was up 2-0 at the first intermission.

Markovic put the Blues up by three late in the second frame as he skated out from behind the net and fired in his own rebound, giving the home team a 3-0 lead heading into the final frame. That goal marked Markovic's 50th career regular season goal as a Varsity Blue.

Brown added the fourth goal of the game 34 seconds into the third period with a beautiful deke to beat Clint Windsor glove side.

Windsor posted 30 saves in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Friday, January 9 as they head to Montreal to take on the Concordia Stingers. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
