STRONG THIRD PERIOD LIFTS BLUES OVER RAMS

Box Score Seven different players scored as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Ryerson Rams 7-4 on Friday night (Jan. 16) at Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Fourth-year forward and assistant captain Jeff Brown registered one goal and three assists, while four other Blues had two points or more on the night.

Veteran netminder Brett Willows certainly turned heads, making 38 saves in his first game back from injury.

Third-year Blues forward Patrick Marsh opened the scoring 4:29 into the game with a powerplay marker assisted by Brown and Corey Jackson.

Ryerson responded three minutes later with a goal off the stick of Michael Fine. Jackson then notched his second of the season off a long point shot, but the Rams evened the score again when Jason Kelly banged in a rebound. The two teams were even at 2-2 after 20 minutes of action.

The Rams gained the lead 3:17 into the second frame, but second-year U of T defenceman Charlie Connell tied it back up, scoring his first of the season with 1:36 to go in the second.

The back-and-forth battle ensued as Christian Finch notched his OUA-leading sixth powerplay goal of season 1:30 into the third period, but Ryerson's Lucas Froese made the game even again at 4-4 three minutes later.

Fifth-year Blues forward and assistant captain Michael Markovic tallied his team-high 11th of the year just over two minutes later to give the Blues the lead for good.

Brown added a powerplay goal midway through the third and Paul Van De Velde rounded out the scoring with 5:21 remaining in the game.

With the win, the Blues improve to 8-10-1 and sit in eighth place in the West, only three points out of fifth.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night as they host the No. 10 Western Mustangs at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
