WOMEN’S SOCCER OLD FOUR TOURNAMENT RECAP

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team went 1-1 at the annual Old Four tournament, August 23-24, hosted by the Queen's Gaels in Kingston, Ont.

The Blues opened the tournament versus the Western Mustangs, narrowly falling 1-0. The Mustangs offence was firing on all cylinders, finishing with 12 shots in the match, including the touch from Tiana Deluzio, who beat the Toronto keeper in the 67th minute to seal the win.

Tori Edgar got the clean sheet for the Mustangs in the win, while her counterpart to start the game, Sara Petrucci, stopped all nine shots she faced before being substituted out.

Toronto went onto face the Queen's Gaels, who fell to the McGill Martlets 1-0 in the other match on Saturday. The Gaels doubled up Toronto in shots in the opening half, with a 4-2 advantage. Neither team could break through the defenders and the game remained scoreless at the half.

In the second, the Varsity Blues broke through, first it was Zoe Carty finding the back of the net in the 79th minute to open up a 1-0 lead. Only three minutes later, Toronto struck again as Chelsea Cheung looked to put the game out of reach. Queen's was able to respond with a late goal from Danielle Lauzon but the Blues held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Varsity Blues open their 2014 regular season campaign this Saturday, August 30 as they host the Laurentian Voyageurs at Varsity Centre. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
