Raphael Casey's 26 yard touchdown run with 39 seconds to go capped off a 99 yard drive as the McGill Redmen came back to defeat the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, 35-33, in CIS football exhibition action on Saturday, August 23 at Varsity Centre.

The Blues had taken their first lead of the game on a 57-yard touchdown reception by Llevi Noel (Toronto) with 2:08 to go but McGill was able to march down the field and score the go ahead touchdown on the next drive.

McGill jumped out to an early lead as quarterback Dallon Kuprowski (Saskatoon) connected with Jean-Philippe Paquette from Trois Rivieres,Quebec, twice on nine-yard and 45-yard touchdown passes. The Redmen held a 14-3 lead after the first quarter.

McGill increased their lead to 21-3 early in the second quarter on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Kuprowski to Montreal native, Kenny Bayne. Kuprowski finished 8-of-13 for 182 yards and three touchdown passes.

The Blues closed the second quarter with 13 straight points to close the gap to 21-16 at half, led by a 25-yard screen pass from Chris Jugovic of Hamilton, Ont. to Lukas Gavac (Mississauga, Ont.). Second-year kicker and Cambridge, Ont. native Eric Hewitson, who went 4-for-4 on the day, hit both field goals in the quarter including a career-high 44-yard field goal.

Hewitson provided the only scoring in the third quarter with his fourth field goal of the game, which was set up by a 40-yard pass from Jugovic to Kevin Bradfield (Toronto). Bradfield led the Blues with 107 receiving yards and 219 all-purpose yards. McGill held a 21-19 lead heading into the fourth.

The Redmen got on the board first in a crazy fourth quarter on a 38-yard touchdown pass from pivot Joel Houle (Boucherville, Que.) to Jonathan Mack (St. Lambert, Que.). The Blues quickly recaptured the momentum as Stone Sousa (Brampton, Ont.), in his first game as a Varsity Blue, returned the kick-off 100 yards for the major as the Blues were again were within two points, 28-26. With under three minutes to go quarterback Marcus Hobbs, of Mississauga, Ont. engineered the go-ahead drive with his touchdown pass to Noel, only to see the Redmen score on the game-winning drive moments later.

Jugovic lead Toronto in passing, going 9-for-14 for 132 yards, while second-year linebacker Corey Williams (Mississauga, Ont.) led the Blues defence with six tackles.
