BLUES CLINCH PLAYOFF BERTH WITH WIN OVER RAMS

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat the Ryerson Rams 4-3 and clinch a playoff spot in the Downtown Showdown School day on Wednesday afternoon at Mattamy Athletic Centre.

With the win, the Blues improve to 14-11-2 and move into fifth place in the OUA West division. The Blues 14th win of the season clinches them a post-season berth for the 25th straight year.

Team captain Blake Boddy (Scarborough) opened the scoring 7:13 into the first period as he tipped a Dylan Heide point shot past Rams goaltender Steven Gleeson on the powerplay.

The Rams responded just over five minutes later with a goal off the stick of Dan Lombardi and the game remained deadlocked at the first intermission.

Ryerson notched two quick goals under three minutes apart midway through the second period; however, after a U of T time out, the Blues rallied and evened the score with back-to-back markers from Russell Turner (Jasper, Alta.) and Christian Finch (Markahm, Ont.) 46 seconds apart and the game remained even heading into the final frame.

Third-year forward Tyler Liukkonen of Sault Ste Marie, Ont., proved to be the game's hero, netting the game-winner 9:02 into the third period.

Third-year goaltender Brett Willows of Rivers, Man., made 43 saves in the win.

The Varsity Blues wrap up the regular season this Saturday, February 15 as they host the Guelph Gryphons at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
