Toronto (18-5-1) finished the season with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Queen's Gaels on Sunday, which lifted them past the Gaels into third place in the OUA standings.
The Mustangs are coming off a lopsided 4-0 win over Waterloo on Sunday and finished the season with a 14-9-1 record, in sixth place.
Western has swept the past two quarter-final series in two games, as U of T looks for their first-ever post-season win over the Mustangs. The Blues took the regular season series 2-0 this season, defeating the Mustangs 2-1 at home on Nov. 1, before notching a 4-1 victory in London two weekends ago (Feb. 1).
Much of the Varsity Blues success this season can be attributed to fourth-year netminder Nicole Kesteris. The Aurora, Ont., native finished the regular season as the top goalie in the OUA and CIS with a .948 save percentage in 18 games played.Â
Kesteris will go head-to-head with Mustangs goaltender Kelly Campbell. The 2012-13 OUA first team all-star boasted a .935 save percentage in 17 games between Western's pipes this season.
The line of team captain Kelly O'Hanlon, sophomore standout Taylor Day and third-year Sonja Weidenfelder has led Toronto's offence in 2013-14. O'Hanlon (Markham, Ont.) topped the team with 18 assists and 23 points, while Day (Ilderton, Ont.) notched a team-high 11 goals and added 10 helpers in 24 games. Weidenfelder (Toronto) has had a breakout season, scoring seven goals and 11 assists.
Not to be outdone, U of T's second line of Alie and Courtney Brind'Amour-McClure and Amanda Ricker have also been forces to be reckoned with. Courtney ranks second on the team with eight goals, while Alie is third with seven. Ricker has posted an impressive 17 points in 23 games this season.
Stacey Scott, Carly Rolph and Cassidy Gosling lead Western's offence with 17 points apiece, while four players, including Scott, have notched a team-high seven goals in 2013-14.Â
