LATE GOAL SINKS BLUES

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to the No. 9 Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Arena.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 5-3-0, while the Mustangs improve to 8-0-1 and remain in first place in the OUA standings.

Third-year forward and Blues point-leader Kristi Riseley opened the scoring late in the first as she tipped in a Sonja Weidenfelder shot on the powerplay. The Blues led 1-0 at the first intermission. Riseley has registered at least one point in all but one of Toronto's first eight games.

Fourth-year defenceman Katelyn Gosling of London, Ont., evened the score eight minutes into the second frame as she wired a shot from the point through traffic into the top corner of the net.

The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the final frame.

Both team had chances to score but it was rookie Mustangs forward Kendra Broad who notched the game-winner with 1:26 to go in the game, capitalizing on a Blues turnover to gain a breakaway and pulling a nice move to find the back of the net.

Fifth-year Blues netminder Nicole Kesteris posted 23 saves in the loss.

The Varsity Blues will look to bounce back tomorrow as they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
